Incoming First Year Students - Information

Although the transition from primary to secondary school can be quite daunting, it is also a time of great excitement and new beginnings. Many parents or guardians will have been through this process before, for others this is a genuine step into the unknown.

Collaborative Effort
I have two simple wishes for each student who will join us this Autumn. Firstly that each of them will be happy in their time with us at Scoil Mhuire. Secondly that each of them does their very best at whatever they do. These may seem like very simple aspirations, but to achieve them requires a serious, dedicated, continuous collaborative effort. Only if we- staff, parents/guardians and students- work together can we achieve this goal.

Parents/Guardians
As parents/guardians you have a very important role to play in your child’s time with us. These years are ones of growth and change, of seeing your children develop from children to young adults. It is a wonderful transition but it can also be very challenging. A simple piece of advice is to stay interested; monitor homework and study, encourage participation in extracurricular activities, help them to develop attitudes and habits that will serve them well as students of Scoil Mhuire, but also beyond the walls of the school. The journal and App will be the most useful aids in this regard. They are our first means of communication with you, and will allow you to monitor homework, study and behaviour etc. on a constant basis.

Responsibility
Lastly to our incoming First Year students, you are the most important person in your education. We- the staff of Scoil Mhuire and your parents/guardians- will do all we can to support, guide and encourage but ultimately a responsibility rests with you, that, whatever you are doing, you give it your very best. Only you will really know what your best is- in class, at study, on the playing field, on stage or simply, but most importantly, in how you act towards others.

Support
When you join us this autumn you will be supported by our pastoral care team- chaplain, guidance counsellors, tutors and year head. You will also be guided by a wonderful group of Sixth Year mentors and prefects who have been through this all themselves.

I look forward to seeing you all again in August, and to the journey that lies ahead and all the opportunities, successes, memories and friendships that will be made in your time at Scoil Mhuire.
