Any extra time will be given for study BEFORE the exam begins, so please ensure you have the necessary equipment with you. The academic year is progressing quickly, with the October Mid-Term break already over. We are delighted with the way the new first years have settled into life at Scoil Mhuire, and of the positive contribution they are already making.

SOCIAL NIGHT
The social night held in early October was a great success, the students seemed to enjoy themselves and it was a wonderful opportunity for the First Years to get to know each other in a social setting. We would like to acknowledge the support of tutors and the sixth year prefects and mentors in ensuring the night went so well.
TAG RUGBY
The Tag Rugby World Cup has also been very successful. Over 160 First Years participated, each team played three matches in the pool stages and we are currently playing the knockout games. The final will be played before the entire year group with a trophy and medals for the winners, runners up and third place team.
FANCY DRESS WALK
We would like to acknowledge the wonderful turn out by First Years for the Halloween Fundraising walk. Students put enormous energy, effort and creativity into their costumes and raised a great amount of money for the school transport fund. a1sx2_Thumbnail1_IMG_9870.JPG

SCHOOL OPEN NIGHT
First Years were also prominent in the preparing and presenting the school on the Open Night held in the week before Mid-Term. A number of teachers have spoken highly of the enthusiasm, good manners and positive attitude presented by those students who attended on the night.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
A number of First Years have been taking advantage of the various extracurricular activities available in the school. Gaelic football, soccer, rugby, camogie and basketball have all started. Hurling will begin after Christmas. Students should also listen out for details of the first and second year musical which takes place after Easter next year. Guitar classes and the school choir are also underway.
CHRISTMAS EXAMINATIONS
With the year moving on, attention now turns to Christmas Examinations. The exams for first years will take place in the first week of December. Unlike in previous years the exams will be class based, reflecting changes in certain subject curricula, and taking into account that the material covered since September does not merit an exam of over an hour in duration. The class based scenario will also allow teachers to guide students in how to approach exams. Students will be given a timetable of exams shortly, but it is essential that they begin planning their study time now. Detailed guidelines and study tips have been provided in the “Homework Matters” booklet that was distributed at the beginning of the year and which is available to download on the school website www.scoilmhuireclane.ie. We have also attached a blank study planner to allow students to make the most of their time between now and December.
The exams are very important, but should not become a source of anxiety. Students will have had class exams in each subject already. With good preparation and a positive approach each student can be confident of doing their best.
Thank you for your continued support in encouraging your son/daughter to do their best in all they do with us at Scoil Mhuire.
