JUNIOR CERTIFICATE

All students up to Junior Certificate follow a curriculum divided as follows:


Core Curriculum (All students do the following subjects)

  • Civic, Social and Political Education

  • English

  • French/German.

  • Geography

  • History

  • Irish

  • Mathematics

  • Religious Education

  • Social, Personal and Health Education

  • Science


In addition students choose three subjects from the following:

  • Art

  • Business Studies

  • Home Economics

  • Materials Technology (Wood)

  • Metalwork (Materials & Technology)

  • Music

  • Technical Graphics



LEAVING CERTIFICATE

At the end of third year students must decide which option they hope to follow for the Leaving Certificate. A number of information evenings will provide students and parents with the information necessary to make an informed choice.

The senior curriculum is divided into four bands as follows:

  • Transfer directly from Junior Certificate to Leaving Certificate two year programme

  • Transfer directly from Junior Certificate and undertake the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) two year course.

  • Transfer directly from Junior Certificate and undertake the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) two year course.

  • Choose the Transition Year prior to a two year Leaving Certificate/LCVP/LCA course.



Leaving Certificate (Traditional)

All students study the four core subjects

Core subjects:

  • Irish

  • English

  • Mathematics

  • French/German

In addition to these, students choose three subjects from the following options:

  • Accounting

  • Art

  • Biology

  • Business

  • Chemistry

  • Construction Studies

  • Design and Communication Graphics

  • Economics

  • Engineering

  • Geography

  • History

  • Home Economics (Social and Scientific)

  • Physics



Transition Year

Transition Year is a one year programme. It provides a bridge to enable students make the transition from Junior to Senior cycle. It encourages personal and social development and recognises the need for students to grow in independence. Transition year fosters academic achievement as students prepare for a Leaving Certificate Programme, further study and adult and working life. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.


THE PROGRAMME.

The programme at Scoil Mhuire Community School is designed and delivered by the Co-ordinators, core team of teachers and teaching staff in consultation with management. The programme is assessed and reviewed each year. Essentially the Transition Year programme offers students a broad and balanced curriculum covering the following areas:

Assessment

Students will be assessed by teachers on an ongoing basis throughout the year. There will also be two formal reports sent home. Students are also expected to maintain a portfolio of their work which will form the basis of two teacher led interviews, which will take place at Christmas and Summer. All these are taken into account when certificates are awarded at the end of the year.



Leaving Certificate Applied

LCA is an option that can be pursued by students who do not wish to undertake the traditional Leaving Certificate. It is suitable for students who wish to pursue the following routes n leaving school:

  • Enter employment directly

  • Pursue a Post Leaving Certificate Course (PLC)

  • Pursue an Apprenticeship

Students study the following subjects:

  • Vocational Preparation and Guidance

  • English and Communication

  • Mathematical Applications

  • Social Education

  • Languages: Irish and a Modern Continental (one per year)

 

Two Vocational Specialisms:

  • Hotel Catering and Tourism

  • Office Skills and Retail Distribution/Graphic Construction and Design/Childcare


Students may also study shorter courses in:

  • Arts Education (Drama)

  • Information Technology

  • Leisure and Recreation (including Physical Education)

  • Religious Education

Subjects are broken down into half-year modules. There is great emphasis on practical tasks and completion of assignments related to individual modules. This work is assessed by the Department of Education. Credits are accumulated reaching a maximum of 200 credits over two years.

Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme

The LCVP is designed to enhance the vocational dimension of the Leaving Certificate. LCVP students study seven Leaving Certificate subjects plus two link modules over two years. The two modules are:

  • Preparation for the world of work

  • Enterprise education.

Students are assessed based on a portfolio of work completed over two years (60% of marks) and on a final exam (40%).
