THE GREEN SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

Scoil Mhuire Community School is involved in the Green Schools Programme, which is an international project designed to encourage and acknowledge whole school action for the environment. It is designed to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of the school for its pupils. This process helps pupils to recognise the importance of environmental issues and take them more seriously in their personal and home lives.

Scoil Mhuire is committed to a long term environmental plan. To assist us in this endeavour we have implemented the following:

• On a rota basis we assign First Year students with litter passes to collect litter after morning break and lunch.

• Recycling bins have been placed in each of the classrooms. These have been clearly marked as ‘Paper Only’ for the recycling of used paper.

• We assist in the collection of paper for the local crèche which children can use (provided the paper has only been used on one side). The containers in the computer rooms are marked for this purpose.

It is up to each and every student to play their role in ensuring that Scoil Mhuire is a cleaner, greener place to work and relax.

• Any litter should be placed in the litter bins that are located throughout the school- if every student takes responsibility for their own litter then there will be no problem.

• Every student should make an effort to reduce the amount of waste they produce, from bringing in less packaging on lunches to minding copies, books and handouts.

• Any paper that is not being used should be deposited in the appropriate recycling bins.

Students should be proud of the school, how we care for it is a reflection of the type of people we are.
